A small island in Ireland, two long-time friends and neighbors, but when one wishes to end the friendship, the tranquility of this remote corner of the world is put to the test. This is the pitch for The Banshees of Inisherin, the new feature film from Martin McDonagh(Three Billboards, Seven Psychopaths, Bittersweet Bruges). The film joins the Disney+ streaming platform catalog on May 31, 2024.
Selected for the Venice Film Festival, the film went home with the Best Actor prize, awarded to Colin Farrell, brilliant in Inisherin's The Banshees. However, it could just as easily have been awarded to the other facet of this duo, Brendan Gleeson, who is breathtaking in his role as a neighbor who wants nothing more to do with the rest of the world. On Inisherin, the remote Irish island where the story is set, in the midst of civil war, Padraic and Colm, the two neighbors played by Farrell and Gleeson, find themselves at an impasse when Colm decides overnight to end their friendship. Faced with Padraic's repeated efforts to pick up the pieces, Colm finally issues a terrifying ultimatum.
Despite all this, the acting duo is the most interesting aspect of the film, which suffers from several long running times, and an immensely sad and heavy tone that is often leaden, and would sap the spirits of even the most cheerful viewer. As Padraic and Colm's relationship deteriorates, it becomes deeply unhealthy. And in this setting, where everyone knows everyone else, this only exacerbates the evil gnawing at the island, where all the characters are sinking into madness in their own way.
