Il pleut dans la maison is a comedy-drama directed and written by Paloma Sermon-Daï, starring Makenzy Lombet, Purdey Lombet and Donovan Nizet. The film was presented in competition at the Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival and at the Champs-Elysées Film Festival. The film was released on April 3, 2024.
The story follows Purdey, 17, and his brother Makenzy, 15, who are left to fend for themselves under a scorching sun. While Purdey works in a hotel complex, Makenzy steals tourists to earn money. Between the recklessness of adolescence and the harshness of adult life, the two protagonists must support each other on this moving journey, which seems to be the last summer of their youth.
What's most striking about Il pleut dans la maison is the veracity of its actors' performances. And with good reason: they all more or less play themselves, with the same names and the same relationships (Makenzy and Purdey are siblings on screen and in life). Inevitably, this allows Paloma Sermon-Daï's camera to capture what many filmmakers are looking for: a sense of reality. And it's a touching one. The loss of innocence, the passage to adulthood and the difficulties of coping, the filmmaker evokes many themes in this first film.
The little siblings are given an independence they didn't necessarily want, and the reactions of each of them differ dramatically. A beautiful initiation story.
