Giving Nazis big tattoos is one of the most tired fantasies of B-movie action. In Sisu - Of Gold and Blood, it's even the premise of the film, due in cinemas on June 14.
As an insert at the beginning of the film explains, Sisu is an untranslatable Finnish word that designates"a form of extreme courage and incredible determination", before adding: "Sisu manifests itself when all hope is lost". This is exactly the case withAatami Korpi, the film's protagonist, a happy-go-lucky gold digger whose loot is stolen by a group of Nazi soldiers. The story of Sisu is set in Finland in 1944: on the eve of the German defeat, the last Nazi soldiers decide to occupy as much territory in Lapland as possible.
But Korpi, a former elite soldier, doesn't take kindly to this, and sets out on a crusade against a few dozen Nazis, armed only with his fists, his courage and his formidable ingenuity. From the very first minutes of the film, the context is dispatched to get to the heart of the matter as quickly as possible: the fighting. John Wick is a clear reference in the staging of violence. Raw, harsh and bloody, the first action scene is literally thrilling, and promises to be one hell of a spectacle!
Even so, the adrenaline rush is diluted by a few too many long takes. Above all, many of the confrontations take place off-screen, which is a pity when the film's premise lies in its no-holds-barred fight scenes. Still, it's a hell of a lot of fun!
