In theaters July 5, 2023, Yo Mama is an explosive comedy directed by Leïla Sy and Amadou Mariko. Featuring the comedic talents of Claudia Tagbo, Zaho and Sophie-Marie Larrouy, the film recounts the unlikely adventure of three mothers who take up rap to reconnect with their sons after discovering a disturbing rap video shot by the latter. What was supposed to be a simple musical response to restore order in their home quickly turns into a viral success that completely overwhelms them. Available on Netflix on October 5, 2024, Yo Mama is an ode to friendship, parenthood and, above all, laughter, in a universe where music and humor intertwine wonderfully.
When Aïcha(Claudia Tagbo), Leïla (Zaho), and Sonia (Sophie-Marie Larrouy) discover that their 11-year-old sons have shot a provocative rap video, they are determined to take matters into their own hands. Their idea? Respond to their children by creating a rap video of their own to re-establish family dialogue. Against all odds, their video goes viral and attracts the attention of a music producer, played by Jean-Pascal Zadi, who sees commercial potential in them. Thrust into an unfamiliar world, these three mothers have to juggle their sudden fame, their new responsibilities as rappers and their daily lives as mothers. This socially conscious comedy shows with humor and kindness how rap becomes a bridge between generations, while highlighting cultural gaps.
Yo Mama is aimed at fans of family comedies and films where music plays a central role. With its mix of rap and wacky comic situations, the film aims to appeal to a wide audience, from young adults to parents who will recognize themselves in the characters' concerns. The film's originality lies in its role reversal: here, it's the parents who rebel through music to get closer to their children. Fans of Claudia Tagbo will appreciate her lively humor and energetic screen presence, while singer Zaho surprises in her first major film role. If you've enjoyed comedies like Telle mère, telle fille or Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu, Yo Mama will win you over with its refreshingly modern edge.
Available on Netflix on October 5, 2024, Yo Mama is a sparkling comedy that focuses on friendship and family ties through a surprisingly offbeat story. With a dynamic cast and humor that's as offbeat as it is endearing, Leïla Sy and Amadou Mariko have created a film that's as entertaining as it is moving. A fine reflection on the clash of generations, with memorable performances by Claudia Tagbo and Zaho. A must-see for the whole family!
Our opinion on Yo Mama (2023):
Distraught by their 11-year-old sons' rap video, three mothers decide to take their turn at rap with an explosive clip, with the aim of re-establishing communication within their household. From this rather crazy pitch, the two filmmakers behind Yo Mama aim above all to draw attention to the difficulty of educating children in housing estates, and keeping them away from bad influences. A project that has everything to please and move, but this is obviously not the film's central aim.
Against all odds, the three best friends achieve resounding success, but are soon overwhelmed by their sudden notoriety and by a world they don't understand... It's also an opportunity to examine the world of rap with a scalpel, a subplot that's much less well mastered because it's full of clichés and clumsy writing. The word that immediately springs to mind is "caricature". Whether it's Jean-Pascal Zadi's character, orOlivia Kuy's, who introduces the three moms to rap, we don't really believe it. Especially since, according to the film, it's extremely easy to produce quality and break through, even when you don't know anything about it.
It's only when the film's real issue - the dialogue between mother and son - is revived that the viewer's interest returns, before a hasty ending. In fact, Yo Mama doesn't necessarily strike the right balance between its various plots, which makes the film sometimes wobbly, with overly simplistic themes.
