Disney sounds the alarm. In 2023, the company was reeling from the loss of 18 million subscribers to its streaming service, Disney+, and decided to react. As a first step, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced an overhaul of the subscription system. After a first price hike in 2022, the monthly subscription in the U.S. will rise from $10.99 to $13.99. For the moment, no details on Europe and other continents have been released.
But that's not all: Bob Iger has hinted that Disney+ will follow the Netflix model, which prohibits account sharing. Tests are currently underway to find the best way to prohibit users from enjoying Disney+ services without paying. Disney+ had already taken a leaf out of the Red N's book by offering a cheaper, ad-supported subscription, but these new decisions won't delight subscribers.
Despite its unpopularity with consumers, the account-sharing ban has multiplied the number of Netflix subscribers. Disney+ hopes to follow this trend and catch up.
