Paramount+ has just unveiled the trailer for Bargain, Le Prix à Payer. This South Korean thriller, already a hit at festivals such as CannesSeries and Serieencamp, will be released exclusively on October 5 in several countries, including France, the USA and the UK.
The synopsis is most intriguing. Under the guise of casual encounters, a group of men are tricked into staying at an isolated hotel. There, they find themselves in the hands of organ traffickers who auction them off. But when a devastating earthquake strikes, everyone - victims, dealers and buyers - finds themselves trapped inside the ruined building. Isolated from the rest of the world, their fight for survival becomes imperative.
The series is an adaptation of a 2015 short film directed by Lee Chung-hyun. Cast members include Jin Sun-kyu, Jun Jong-seo and Chang Ryul. The original story has been revisited and turned into a six-episode series by director and screenwriter Jeon Woo-sung, who had previously collaborated on the short film. Co-written by Choi Byeong-yun and Kwak Jae-min, it is produced under the aegis of showrunner Byun Seungmin and Bang Jin Ho.
Bargain made a name for itself at film festivals. It was awarded the Critics' Prize at the Seriencamp Festival in Cologne in June, and also won the Best Screenplay Award at CannesSeries in April. The series continues its upward trajectory as it is up for official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023, where it will have its North American premiere on September 9.
While anticipation is high for this series, reviews and opinions are still to come following its imminent release. Fans of dystopian thrillers can already mark October 5 on their calendars.
Hyung Soo, in the midst of negotiating a fee for a sexual service rendered by Joo Young, finds himself trapped and priced out of an auction house that is part of a human organ trafficking ring. In an instant, various parts of his body are put up for sale, and many people start shouting purchase prices. Just as his kidney is being sold to Geuk Ryul, an earthquake occurs and the building begins to collapse. Any crime can be buried under it, and people will become monsters for money.
