After a stint in the Disney stable with his Cruella, Craig Gillepsie is returning to his first love, the bigger-than-life true story of Moi, Tonya. Dumb Money, his new feature film, is due in cinemas on November 29.
Paul Dano stars as Keith Gill, aka Roaring Kitty, an American youtuber who, in 2020, rocked Wall Street by urging his followers to invest in a near-bankrupt company, with thousands or even millions of dollars up for grabs for the brave. In addition to Paul Dano, the film's impressive cast includes Shailene Woodley, Sebastian Stan, Seth Rogen, Dane DeHaan and many others.
By focusing on this group of proletarians seeking to enrich themselves, and Wall Street trying to stand in their way, the film says a lot about post-Covid America and its increasingly marked inequalities. The crusade of Gill's character, whose story was told in the book The Antisocial Network, is a delight in more ways than one. Dumb Money fits perfectly into the feel-good movie genre, and leaves you smiling. The true story is little-known in France, but it made headlines in the American media for months, and reached Dantesque proportions, taking the main protagonists all the way to the US Supreme Court.
It's a typical David vs. Goliath story, and the tension is palpable throughout. Because - without going into the technical details that make the film so interesting - Gill's main challenge, and that of the people who follow him, is to maintain their investment in the company they've chosen, because the longer they wait, the more their initial investment increases in value, and the more the investment attracts other curious people. In short, the snowball effect is almost infinite.
