Almost ten years after presenting his 6-hour epic, The Thousand and One Nights, at the Directors' Fortnight, and three years after unveiling Diary of Tûoa, Miguel Gomes is back at Cannes 2024, this time (and for the very first time) in Official Competition, with his new film Grand Tour .
The story is that of Edward, a British Empire official in Rangoon, Burma, in 1917, who runs away on the day he is to marry his fiancée Molly. Determined to get married, Molly sets off in search of Edward, following in the footsteps of his Grand Tour across Asia. The lead role is played by Gonçalo Waddington, alongside Crista Alfaiate and Teresa Madruga.
"This is Miguel Gomes' first official selection and competition entry. Grand Tour is a film of great visual virtuosity, partly in black and white, but also in color. Miguel Gomes is one of the very singular voices of European and Portuguese auteur cinema," explained Thierry Frémaux at the festival press conference on April 11.
