Alain Guiraudie returns to cinemas on October 16, 2024 with Miséricorde. Discover our review and the trailer.

Jérémie (the unfathomable Félix Kysyl) returns to Saint-Martial for the funeral of his former baker boss. He spends a few days with his widow, Martine(Catherine Frot, who makes a brilliant entry into the Guiraudie universe). But between a mysterious disappearance, a threatening neighbor and an abbot(Jacques Develay) with strange intentions, his stay in the village takes an unexpected turn.

With Miséricorde, Alain Guiraudie(L'Inconnu du lac, Rester vertical) has created a new film noir with an intense desire that, for once, fails to deliver. Far from frustrating the viewer, this little game of cat and mouse proves, on the contrary, to be as devilishly funny as it is effective. Jérémie's relationship with the few inhabitants of this hamlet lost between the Larzac and Cévennes mountains soon spirals out of control, particularly with Vincent(Jean-Baptiste Durand), his childhood friend and son of the late baker.

As rumors fly, the village awakens to a heavy atmosphere. Once again, Alain Guiraudie unveils a work devoured by the desires and perversions of his male characters, who probe and observe each other, seek each other out or avoid each other. As the puppeteer of this little world, the French filmmaker revels in the erotic tension that runs through every scene, such as the highly humane one in the confessional, led by a priest who is enigmatic to say the least, but oh so truculent.

With Guiraudie, nature often gives and takes, and the autumn-colored forest of this detective story is no exception, bringing forth handfuls of phallic-looking mushrooms, like buried secrets to be plucked at will. Presented in the Cannes Première selection at the last Cannes Film Festival, Miséricorde will be released in cinemas on October 16, 2024.
