The Cannes Film Festival is showcasing some exceptional genre films at its midnight screenings. Seung Wan Ryoo's I, The Executioner, the eagerly awaited sequel to his hit Veteran, promises a breathtakingaction thriller from South Korea.
I, The Executioner follows detective Seo Do-cheol, head of the Violent Crime Investigation Division, as he faces a major crisis. With Hae-in Jung, Jung-Min Hwang and Jang Yoon-Ju in the cast, the film promises to be an intense thriller, blending action and suspense.
Seung Wan Ryoo, acclaimed director of 2015's hugely successful Veteran, returns with I, The Executioner. His previous films have demonstrated his talent for grippingaction thrillers. The cast, including Hae-in Jung and Jung-Min Hwang, are renowned for their powerful performances in this film genre.
Thierry Frémaux commented: "The midnight screenings are always a wonderful way of welcoming to Cannes cinema which, a few years ago, we might have thought had no place at Cannes, but which in fact does. For example, Soi Cheang's Hong Kong film Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, which is a Hong Kong brawler, a genre film which, like the other film I, The Executioner, by Seung Wan Ryoo, which is a Korean film, are two genre films that are also great directors' films. Cannes has never shunned genre cinema, and has always believed that great directors of crime films, swordplay and comedy were also great directors.
