Oom, an undocumented migrant and caregiver, struggles to preserve his humanity by caring for the elderly and disabled. Such is the scenario of Mongrel, the new and first feature film by Chiang Wei Liang and You Qiao Yin. The film has been selected for the Quinzaine des Cinéastes 2024 and will be unveiled at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, May 15-25.
La Quinzaine des Cinéastes ' review: "An ultra-masterful first film, Mongrel plunges into the rugged Taiwanese countryside, where illegal immigrants from Southeast Asia are sold as live-in caregivers. Oom is one of them: an almost Christ-like character, imbued with great compassion, he has to choose between fleeing for his survival and staying for humanity's sake."
