Our review of Moonrise Kingdom (2012):
It's 1965, on a small New England island, says the narrator, a sort of tour guide in period costume. A town, a family, a scout camp, a getaway and a lot of surprises - that's how Moonrise Kingdom might be summed up.
The film begins when a young boy escapes from his scout camp. In fact, the story begins a year earlier, when young Sam meets Suzy and begins a letter-writing correspondence that seals the details of their escape the following summer. Sam disappears, and then it's Suzy's turn. They reunite and decide to follow the path of Goulet de marée at mile 3.25, the bay they rename Moonrise Kingdom. You'd think this would be the film's great adventure, but it's not. They are soon caught up by parents, police and scouts, who bring them back to reality. Three younger siblings, a mother having an affair with the chief of police for her, social welfare for him. This is where it all (re)begins. Two young lovers, two lost children, struggling to come to terms with society, who, having found each other, have no intention of going their separate ways.
And so much the better for us. Moonrise Kingdom reminds us of that age when the field of possibilities stretched beyond the cliffs, beyond propriety and beyond the world of adults. It's a poetic, romantic love affair. A renewal of hope that reminds us that one day, we too wanted to decide for ourselves what to live and with whom. Through this childlike tale, we discover as many landscapes as sensations. One minute they're dancing innocently to Françoise Hardy on the beach, the next they're being punished and subjected to the parental yoke. The solemnity of their feelings doesn't seem to mar the carefree nature of their story: anything is possible. As if to further underline the fragility of this relationship, the young couple appearing on screen for the first time, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward, are joined by an all-star cast including Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Tilda Swinton.
As aesthetically pleasing as it is poetic, Moonrise Kingdom draws the viewer into the rhythm of this frantic race to safeguard the possibility of a love that is as disobedient as it is benevolent.
