A surprise we weren't expecting! At the Game Awards, Hades 2, the sequel to the first opus released in 2020, made its surprise debut with a trailer broadcast during the event, on the night of December 8-9, 2022. The trailer revealed part of the plot, revolving around the adventures of Melinoe, sister of Zagreus, hero of the first opus.
Since its release in early access, the game has been kept waiting. Fans are hoping to be able to play this eagerly-awaited title soon. Some will be luckier than others: Hades 2 will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on release. PC and other console gamers will have to sit tight and wait for this opus to be adapted for other media...
"As Melinoe, the immortal princess of the underworld, you'll explore a larger, deeper mythical world, defeating the forces of the Titan with all the power of Olympus behind you, in an extended story that unfolds continuously through each of your setbacks and achievements. New locations, challenges, upgrade systems and surprises await you as you plunge again and again into this ever-changing underground world."
As far as the story of this new opus is concerned, note that the brand-new hero - in this case Zagreus' sister - is also inspired by Greek mythology (stemming from Orphism, a religious current of Greek worship as we know it), Melinoé being, as the developers explain on their site, based on"an ancient subterranean deity" - goddess of ghosts and nightmares, to be precise - and potentially linked to Hades. We learn that she'll be taking a trip to the underworld to kill Cronos, son of Ouranos and Gaia, Titan and father of Zeus.
In terms of gameplay, Supergiant Games intends to offer plenty of great things, starting with virtually unlimited weapon customization, with "bonuses" that the gods of Olympus might grant you. Challenges are also planned, as well as new areas to explore, so as not to bore gamers who have already played the first opus.
In addition, early access to the game was available, as it was for the first opus. The game will also feature dubbing for several characters, in line with what players loved about the original Hades. As for the release date, we'll have to wait a little longer to find out, but there's no doubt that the wait will be worth it, given the success of the first installment. In the meantime, let's get back to the first opus, folks?
