Bad news for Star Wars gamers... According to sources close toInsider Gaming, Respawn Entertainment (already behind Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel, Survivor) was working on a first-person game based on the universe of The Mandalorian, the phenomenon series that has captivated millions of viewers around the galaxy far, far away, on Disney+ (and soon in cinemas). The game, which was in the early stages of development, promised total immersion in the skin of a Mandalorian bounty hunter, at a time when the Galactic Empire was extending its domination.
But the hype was short-lived... And it's a cold shower for fans, sinceElectronic Arts, which was to have published the game, has announced that it is halting development of this opus, as ourIGN colleagues explain. The reason? A reorganization of the company that led to the layoff of 670 people (5% of the workforce). With this statement, EA confirmed the existence of the game. However, the Black Panther, Iron Man and third Star Wars Jedi games remain in development.
In this game, the player took on the role of a Mandalorian sailing across the galaxy to capture targets - dead or alive - in exchange for lucrative rewards. Mobility and style, as VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb pointed out, were the cornerstones of this experience, guided by Mohammad Alavi 's initial creative vision at Respawn. Although Alavi left the ship for new adventures, leaving the direction of the game in doubt, the emphasis on dynamic gameplay seemed to remain intact. Thanks to the Mandalorian's jetpack, players would have been able to indulge in fast, fluid movements such as horizontal runs, vertical jumps and even boosted slides, reminiscent of certain mechanics in Apex Legends.
The available arsenal was not to be outdone, offering a variety of weapons and tools characteristic of the Mandalorians, such as the wrist rocket launcher, the grappling hook, or the sight for marking enemies and targets. But contrary to what some might have hoped, the game did not feature an open world, but rather linear levels set on various planets in the Star Wars universe. This game structure promises to guide players through a series of captivating adventures, each offering its own set of challenges and rewards.
The question of integrating a multiplayer experience also remained unanswered. An adventure which, unfortunately, will not see the light of day for aficionados of the Star Wars universe... Unless EA reconsiders its decision at some point. And to console ourselves, we're looking forward to another game in the saga, Star Wars: Outlaws, scheduled for release this year. So get set!
