Ah, Paris, its monuments, its stores ... and its tax-free shopping! Yes, dear tourists, you can save money on your purchases in France thanks toVAT exemption. But how can you take advantage of it? We explain it all!

Who can benefit from tax-free shipping?

To be eligible, you must :

  • Reside outside the European Union or in a third country (French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, French Southern and Arctic Territories, Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélémy, as well as Andorra, San Marino and the Vatican).
However, the tax exemption does not apply to residents of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Mayotte, Reunion and Monaco, or to staff of transport companies, among others.
  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Be in France for less than 6 months

Which products are affected?

Your purchases must :

  • Be carried in your personal luggage
  • Not intended for resale
  • Exceed €100, spent in a maximum of three days in the same store or group of stores

There is no limit to the number of items you can buy, but some items such as tobacco, weapons, cultural goods, petroleum products and private vehicles are excluded. Look for stores displaying the "Détaxe électronique" sticker to make your life easier.

Departure procedure

Before leaving France, and more specifically before checking in your luggage, you must obtain a customs visa by scanning the barcode on your export sales note at a PABLO terminal (located at international airports, ports, border stations, etc.). In addition to the sales slip, the customer must bring his or her passport, the goods purchased and his or her transport ticket.

Once validated, the merchant is informed of the buyer's departure and promptly refunds the VAT. The buyer can also collect the refund in cash from the nearest refund office.

Note also that goods must leave the EU within three months of purchase.

On your marks, get set, shop!
