Born in Indonesia around the 12th century and popularized in East Java around the 13th century, the story of Prince Panji has been the source and inspiration of performing and visual arts in Java and Bali. The story of Prince Panji was the source and inspiration of the performing and visual arts of Java and Bali: dances, masks, music, puppets (wayang beber) that were transmitted as far away as Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand.
Popular and flourishing during the Majapahit era, in the 14th and 15th centuries, the story of Panji traveled with traders on the Nusantara spice route to East Asia from the 17th to 18th centuries.
Oral tradition was the means of transmitting this epic. The story of Panji was also engraved on Hindu temple reliefs.
