Carmen, the world's most performed opera, is reinvented by ballet artist Julien Lestel in an original, feminist adaptation. Presented by Théâtre Libre, the ballet will be in Paris for just a few days, from April 9 to 20, 2025.

Attention opera and ballet lovers! The famous comic opera Carmen returns to the Paris stage in a brand-new, feminist adaptation. Ballet Julien Lestel presents a highly urban and resolutely contemporary version, in a show lasting 1 hour 10 minutes.

Julien Lestel has taken on this daunting task, adapting the world's best-known opera into a 1 hour 10 minute contemporary ballet. In this adaptation of Carmen's ballet, a fiercely independent Bohemian woman from Seville sees her desire for freedom shattered by the destructive jealousy of a man in love with her.

While respecting the original plot, the choreographer echoes current issues concerning the role of women in society, their autonomy, their quest for equality and the tragedy of feminicide. With resolutely contemporary movement and an inventive use of music, Ballet Julien Lestel delivers a daring, committed reinterpretation of the opera Carmen.

From a musical point of view, Julien Lestel invites the audience to rediscover the music of Georges Bizet, while adding the percussion of Shchedrin and a contemporary musical creation byIván Julliard. An innovative choice for this adaptation of Carmen, which we can't wait to discover.

Ballet Julien Lestel, founded by choreographer Julien Lestel, is distinguished by its fusion of classical and contemporary dance, creating powerful and moving works. Based in Marseille, the company explores universal and contemporary themes with a modern, aesthetic approach. Their shows, renowned for their emotional intensity and creativity, are acclaimed both in France and internationally. Their new production of the adaptation of Carmen is scheduled for April 9-20, 2025 in Paris.
