China is full of traditional legends, stories we tell children and grown-ups, stories made of magic and light where it’s always about love. Angelin Preljocaj, a choreographer we know for being carried away by tales and wonders (he already staged, among others, Romeo and Juliet, The Nights (based on Arabian Nights and even Snow White) got carried away by one of them.
“Once upon a time in China, during a storm, two travelers find refuge in a temple. They discover then a magnificent painting on the wall displaying a group of young ladies. The traveler called Chu falls deeply in love with one of them. To meet with the match that sparked his flame, he decides to get through the picture…”
Travelling through times and pictures, being carried away by love and passion. Angelin Preljocaj and his company ask about the illusions and the power of painting in this show also suited to the young public, performed as often, at the Théâtre National de Chaillot in December. As for each of his creations, the purity of his steps is associated to a strong artistic team: an electro-fusion score by Nicolas Godin, cofounder of the group Air, costumes by designer Azzedine Alaïa, decors and videos created by designer Constance Guisset and lights by Eric Soyer. Like the guaranteed of a moment untouched by time, magic and still spectacular.
