Inspired by courtesan Marie Duplessis’ superb and tragic life with whom he fell in love, in 1848, Alexandre Dumas fils writes “La Dame aux camélias”, a splendid novel that inspired, among many others, composer Giuseppe Verdi for his now world-famous opera, La Traviata. Stager and director Benoît Jacquot, César for best movie and best director for “Farewell my Queen” in 2012, many times inspired by the greatest classics (from Dostoyevsky to Goethe), stage back in 2004 his own version of La Traviata for Paris Opera and comes back this season on the stage of Opéra Bastille.
On the stage, Violetta, alternately performed by sopranos Marina Rebeka and Anna Netrebko, suddenly falls in love after a debauching life of non-stop parties. The courtesan falls in love with Alfredo (Rame Lahaj and Charles Castronovo) who, torn apart between reason and passion, will step back facing this obvious happiness and see the one he loves die, in a heartbreaking and sumptuous song. A classic we’re not tired of, carried away and submerged by Verdi’s notes that travel through time and reach us now.
