In the heart of the 1820’s, Alexander Pushkin’s famous and successful novel “Eugene Onegin” gave the Russian empire one of its first worldwide literary recognition. In 1879, this romantic verse novel tells the tragic missed opportunities of four young people in Saint Petersburg from a bourgeois background becomes an opera set up by the master, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and confirms its place – one more time – among the Russian classics.
Many many years later, in 1965, South-African choreographer John Cranko, truly found of tragic stories, has been moved by the story when he was younger and decided to make it a ballet for the Stuttgart Ballet. Quickly the work becomes major. The latter entered the Opera de Paris repertoire in 2009, performed from February 10 at Palais Garnier.
The ballet has an easy plot and focuses on the four characters of the novel, Eugen Onein, Valdimir Lenski, Olga and Tatiana Larine and on the tragedy of their unappeased love.
