As 2023 draws to a close, the Odéon Théâtre de L'Europe - Atelier Berthier presents the audacious and engaging play "Carte Noire Nommée Désir", whose title is inspired by an advertising slogan, the better to comment on it critically. Playwright, performer and director Rebecca Chaillon is accompanied by seven Afro-descendant performers, and the immersive theater pieces currently on stage in Paris and coming soon willexplore the stereotypes and fantasies surrounding black women's bodies with rare intensity. Over nearly 2 hours and 40 minutes, the show develops an extraordinary artistic experience, combining poetry, dance, circus and lyrical song. Carte Noire Nommée Désir is more than just a theatrical performance; it's a quest for freedom and authenticity, a voyage of initiation into a world where imaginations have not yet been decolonized.
The play stands out for its ability to explore profound themes such as hypersexualization, alienation from whiteness, and colonial history. It raises essential questions about the visibility and invisibility of black women in France, their models of growth, and the family secrets that influence their worldview. This collective, poetic creation aims to reappropriate the history of black women and question the construction of desire in a context where identity is complex and often marginalized.
The production of this piece is the fruit of collaboration between various institutions and artists. It is produced by Compagnie Dans le Ventre and co-produced by several theaters and cultural institutions(T2G in Gennevilliers and MC93 in Bobigny). This diversified support testifies to the importance and relevance of the work in the contemporary cultural landscape.
To accompany the mediation of this work, the Théâtre de l'Odéon is also offering performances with English surtitles, ameeting with Rébecca Chaillon, on Sunday December 10 after the performance - also at the Ateliers Berthier 17ème, as well as a conference: "Me too": sexe, genre et race, Séminaires contrepoints en écho au spectacle, Wednesday December 13 at 6pm - at the Odéon 6ème.
Carte Noire Nommée Désir is more than a play; it' s a call for reflection, a mirror held up to our society on the perception and representation of black women and their bodies. It's an essential cultural experience for anyone interested in art as a means of social transformation and intercultural dialogue. Not to be missed, until December 17 2023 at Théâtre de l'Odéon, Ateliers Berthier 17th.
