Macbeth, by William Shakespeare and translated from English by Yves de Bonnefoy, runs at the Comédie-Française until July 20, 2024. Set inmedieval Scotland, Shakespeare 's tragedy romanticizes the reign of Macbeth.
Macbeth was King of Scotland from 1040, until his death in 1507. Macbeth 's reign has inspired the world of literature and the 7th art. William Shakespeare wrote Macbeth between 1599 and 1606, publishing it only a few years later, in 1623. The play has been revived over the centuries, notably by David Garrick in 1744, and David Greig even imagined a sequel to the play in 2010 with Dunsinane . The play is now adapted and directed by Silvia Costa, who is also responsible for the set design.
Silvia Costa returns to the Comédie-Française afterAnnie Ernaux 's Mémoire de fille in 2023. Silvia Costa graduated in 2006 with a degree in "Visual Arts and Theatre" from the IUAV University in Venice, and now presents her plays at Italian and international festivals. She makes her operatic debut in 2019 with Claude Vivier's Hiérophanie. Since 2020, she has been part of the artistic ensemble of the Comédie de Valence in the Drôme region of France. In 2022, Silvia Costa was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture.
Macbeth was added to the Répertoire in 1985, representing all the plays that can be performed in the Salle Richelieu of the Comédie-Française. Silvia Costa 's staging focuses on the prediction made by three witches about General Macbeth's future. Obsessed by this prediction, Macbeth kills King Duncan, along with his wife. The couple find themselves in a spiral of guilt, and the entire play gives rise to a confusion of values between good and evil.
9 members of the Troupe de la Comédie-Française are on stage: Alain Lenglet, Julie Sicard, Pierre-Louis Calixte, Suliane Brahim, Jennifer Decker, Julien Frison, Noam Morgensztern, Birane Bia and Clément Bresson .
Macbeth can be seen at the Salle Richelieu at the Comédie-Française until July 20, 2024.
