Exiled to Sweden during the Second World War, Peter Weiss developed a committed body of work, blending history, politics and art. His documentary theater, notably Marat/Sade (1964), explores the tensions between revolution and oppression. His monumental novel The Aesthetics of Resistance, published in three volumes from 1976 to 1982, explores the anti-fascist struggle and the role of art in emancipation.
