From April 4, 2017 to January 7, 2018, Paris Cité des Sciences runs an exhibition focusing on digital. Entitled “Terra Data”, this exhibition questions how data are used in our societies and how algorithms are used in our daily lives. To be discovered with your family and children from 12 years old!

Running from April 4, 2017 to January 7, 2018, Cité des Sciences exhibition Terra Data questions the world in the digital age! If the 20th century has been the digital century, the 21st century is the data century (a phenomenon enabled by the advances in the digital field).

If we hear about data daily, do we really know what a data is and from what process they create knowledge? Thanks to the scientific support of the Institut national de recherche en information et en automatique [French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation], the exhibition offers to discover the diversity of data and the development of new tools for collecting. For scientific studies or as part of marketing strategies, our visits to the digital world leaves marks used in the real world: the access to websites remain free but we pay it by accepting “cookies” tracking each and every click, collecting information about our preferences which are later analyzed to foresee our readings or guide our purchases!

This is the function performed by algorithms enabling to cross-reference and analyze volumes inaccessible to a human-powered process but also to develop knew knowledges from data that are submitted, an intriguing and terrifying subject to be discovered throughout the exhibition! As a matter of fact, after a “scientific and technic” presentation of data, the Cité des Sciences presents the risks it presents especially when it comes to the anonymization of data, a very important civic subject hard to explain to children.

As a memo, for this exhibition, the Cité des Sciences gathered a group of 70 volunteers who debated and asked questions they wanted the exhibition to answer, in partnership with the Res Publica foundation!
