Beyond the stars, the Musée d'Orsay's exhibition investigates the mystical side of Symbolist landscape painting. Since the Renaissance, and even more so since the Romantic period, landscape has been the pictorial genre reputed to enable the formal translation of immediate spiritual experiences that cannot be formulated by language.
Gauguin, Denis, Monet, Hodler, Klimt, Munch and Van Gogh have all attempted to make visible secular, Catholic and Protestant mystical beliefs and superstitions, such as the search for the infinite, the ordeal of night, the quest for light, the quest to merge the individual into the whole, and the experience of the transcendent forces of nature , all of which enter into dialogue, as does the relationship with nature before and after the cataclysm of the First World War.
