After the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Irving Penn is making the rounds in Paris. From September 21, 2017 to January 29, 2018, the Grand Palais is offering a major retrospective around the work of photographer Irving Penn, the first of its kind in France since his death.
An exhibition that retraces 70 years of career with over 240 photos taken during his lifetime by the hand of the American master around his work on fashion, portraits, nudes, war, street scenes and still lifes.
The retrospective opens with street scenes from Philadelphia and New York, as well as images of the war in Europe, and then offers visitors a chronological as well as thematic tour. The latest photos on display are those related to his work on fashion and still life, taken between 1990 and 2000.
Of particular note are his portraits of Truman Capote, Alvin Aley, Ingmar Bergman, Tom Wolfe and Zaha Hadid, as well as his work for Vogue magazine, to which the exhibition devotes a large section with photos of Jerome Robbins, Spencer Tracy, Alfred Hitchcock, Salvador Dali and Igor Stravinsky.
