Thanks to its exhibition “1924, Paris accueille l’Univers Olympique” focused on Paris welcoming the Olympics, the city of Paris hopes to tip the scales in its favor. The idea is to use pictures to recall that Paris is one of the capitals where sport has experienced moments of glory.
Indeed, in Paris, Sorbonne, Baron Pierre de Coubertin brings the modern Olympics back in 1894. It is in Paris as well that most of the international sport federations were born. In 2024, we hope that Olympics and Paralympic Games will happen in Paris.
In 1924, for the first time, about 6,000 athletes from 45 countries came to come face to face. People came from South Africa, Japan, Finland, Argentina to see incredible men. We discover stateless swimmer Johnny Weissmuller – who played Tarzan on the screen in 1932 – French weightlifter Charles Rigoulot considered as “world’s strongest man” and female New-Yorker Gertrude Ederle who became the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
In any case, “Journées Olympiques” (Olympic days) on June 23 and 24, 2017, confirmed that the city of Paris stacks all the odds in its favor to get the Olympics. As deputy mayor in charge of sport and tourism Jean-François Martins says: this testimony of the past is an amazing manner to show what it means to Paris to apply to 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games: building a sustainable heritage at the service of inhabitants be it at the level of infrastructure or progress and the society.
