International Art Fair – FIAC 2017 in Paris: Oscar Tuazon’s odd water column in Place Vendôme

From October 16 to November 1, 2017, for Paris FIAC, Oscar Tuazon transforms Place Vendôme. If usually, passersby don’t look up to see the top of the 44-m high column honoring Austerlitz soldiers, during FIAC, we’re invited to have a look inside water pies, a symbol of connection between humans.

During each International Art Fair (FIAC), we wonder what mysterious objects will appear in the Place Vendôme. For its 6th participation to FIAC, the Comté Vendôme gave pride of place to 42-year old American artist Oscar Tuazon who associates sculpture and architecture in rather minimalist works.

After the whitened trees by Ugo Rondinone in 2016, Dan Graham’s “sculptures/pavillons” in 2015, Paul McCarthy’s plastic tree that caused a scandal in 2014, Tadashi Kawamata’s birds nest in 2013 and Jaume Plensa’s transparent giants in 2012, it’s now time for the pipes to appear in Place Vendôme.

Oscar Tuazon explains his approach. According to him, “Sculpture is a hole in the world. Not an object but its absence, a void. A sculpture lacks life, needs you, it’s an emptiness you occupy. Our world is water; make a sculpture for water, then. A pipe, a hole moving water through the earth, a passage from one place to another. Water is public space underground us. We need to go there, move through it ourselves, go inside the pipeline and live there.”

Inside the 2,1-m wide giant pipes, tree trunks cut from the Bois de Vincennes, “trees are solid water, live water” Oscar Tuazon says. That’s food for thoughts… The artist thinks that wood is an indicator of the health of an ecosystem, if Paris wood is beautiful and in great shape, it means that the city is in good health, if not, we should worry about water shortage now and avoid taking actions too late!

We impatiently wait for October 16 to discover this installation!
