Head to the Musée de la Grande Guerre in Meaux for a day of re-enactment, this Saturday, June 23, 2018. Just before the Meaux AirShow, and on the occasion of the centenary air festival, the Musée de la Grande Guerre is organizing a free day on the theme of aviation.
To liven up the day, theEscadrille Quentin Roosevelt association from Château-Thierry will be telling the story of aviation in 14-18, with 1/3-scale aircraft models: Nieuport 17 in tribute to the Escadrille La Fayette, Nieuport 28, an exact replica of Quentin Roosevelt's plane, Fokker Eindecker and Spad XIII will be on display on the museum lawns.
Historical aviation enthusiasts will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the aircraft of the era, and a wooden model-building workshop will even help children understand aerodynamics!
At 3:30 p.m., a free concert by the Ensemble Calliopée will transport us back to 14-18, with trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba playing together as a brass quintet for 45 minutes.
And the highlight of the day is the re-enactment of aerial combat at 5pm!
German and French aircraft from 14-18 will battle it out in the air, while the German and French armies will attempt to defend their positions on the ground with on-board machine guns.
This re-enactment will let you feel the tension and violence of the frontline in 14-18, thanks to the staging of Michel Geindre (Flight Director), the commentary of Rémi Paque and the planes and pilots of the Meaux AirShow!
During the show, you'll find the Red Baron's famous Fokker DR1 and Quentin Roosevelt's Nieuport each leading their own patrols.
On the ground, the German and French armies defend their positions under heavy fire from on-board machine guns (unloaded, of course!).
Take advantage of the day to visit the museum. Opened just 6 years ago, the Musée de la Grande Guerre is a nugget, and can be visited by all ages from 5 upwards. The project is the brainchild of Jean-Pierre Verney, a history buff who has spent 50 years of his life bringing together 50,000 objects from 14-18, including soldiers' outfits, tanks, Marne cabs and everyday objects from the Parisian rear.
Currently, the Musée de la Grande Guerre is devoting an exhibition to Families in the Great War, between the heartbreak of leaving for the front and the fear of (not) returning, with heartbreaking stories of families who corresponded and children who hoped to see their fathers again...
