Jômon art back in Paris! Following the exhibition devoted to this period in the history of the Land of the Rising Sun (11,000 BC - 400 BC) and its people in 1998, the Maison de la Culture du Japon is once again hosting an exhibition focusing on Jômon art and crafts from October 17 to December 8, 2018. A retrospective organized as part of the Japonismes 2018 season and featuring numerous archaeological objects, including several pieces classified as "National Treasure" and "Important Cultural Property".
Dogû figurines, jars,utensils, pottery for cooking or storing food, axes, woven wooden baskets, fish hooks... so many treasures from ancient times that visitors will be able to contemplate to grasp the importance of this period in the history of Japan and its people in the country's arts and crafts. The exhibition also provides an opportunity to discover - or rediscover - the " astonishing cultural and spiritual life that developed " during this era.
The retrospective is divided into two main sections: the first presents 10,000 years of evolution " of plastic beauty through various types of motifs on Jômon pottery ", including nail marks, finger marks, rope marks, shell marks, engraved designs and clay applications.
The second is devoted to various objects evoking the beliefs and spirituality of the Jômon people, including several dogû - anthropomorphic statuettes made of fired clay and mainly depicting female deities with generous breasts - and hunting scenes adorning jars and other decorative objects. Two conferences are also organized around the exhibition on Tuesday October 16 and Wednesday October 17, in the presence of several specialists.
