Dedicated to Alberto Giacometti’s work and devoted to exhibition, art history research and teaching, Paris Institut Giacometti opened in June 2018 driven by the Fondation Giacometti. Set in the Montparnasse neighborhood, this exceptional place covering 350 sqm expects to renew the look we have on Giacometti’s work. And to do so, it resorts to – for instance – cartes blanches.
It’s the case with the carte blanche given to contemporary artist Annette Messager and her exhibition called “Nos Chambres” [Our Rooms] running from October 16, 2018 to January 13, 2019. The latter browsed through Giacometti’s works and archives: sculptures, drawings, sketchbooks, private documents that have been gathered to create a tour made of several “chambres à deux” [Double Rooms], like a dialog between the two artists.
The public is led to roam the Chambre des Rencontres [Room of Meetings] dedicated to Giacometti’s entourage and meetings in which are exhibited photographs, letters, notebooks and works; the Chambre des Légendes [Room of Legends], the Chambre des Nez à Nez [Room of face to face] gathering Giacometti’s and Annette Messager’s works; the Chambre des Désordres [Room of Disorders] gathering old and new works by Annesse Message covering themes related to Giacometti’s work; and finally, the Chambre des Annettes [Room of Annettes] referencing to the three Annettes who surrounded the artist: Annette Stampa, his mother, Annette Arm and ultimately Annette Messager.
A private and collaborative carte blanche between Annette Messager and Alberto Giacometti (from beyond the grave, if you want) allowing to understand a bit better Giacometti’s work without forgetting the private sphere.
