Each year, the Monnaie de Paris opens its doors to a contemporary artist for a major exhibition in an atypical location, the capital's former mint. This time, Kiki Smith has been invited, a first for a French institution.
At the invitation of the Monnaie de Paris, the artist is exhibiting her work in the 10 large rooms of the historic monument, a total area of 1,000m²...
Kiki Smith began her career at the age of 20, while studying at the Hartford Art School in Connecticut in 1974. She joined the Collaborative Projects group in 1976 and discovered the use of unconventional materials in art.
Her works are committed. Kiki Smith is a feminist, and mobilized after the AIDS epidemic that hit the United States in the 1980s. Her entire body of work reflects her struggles through human bodies, often female, which she sometimes represents in fragmented form, sometimes sublimated, in different materials such as bronze, plaster, glass, porcelain, tapestry, paper, wax...
Kiki Smith may not be well known in France, but she was named one of Time 's "TOP 100 People Who Make the World" in 2006, received the US National Medal of Arts in 2013 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center.
A wonderful discovery!
