The Louvre Museum offers a retrospective around the immense career of Pierre Soulages from December 11, 2019 to March 9, 2020. The perfect time to immerse yourself in outrenoir on the occasion of the artist's 100th birthday.

Pierre Soulages in all its forms ... The Louvre Museum devotes a retrospective to the artist king of black from December 11, 2019 to March 9, 2020. An exceptional tribute to the 100 years of the painter (he was born on December 24, 1919) through a new and personal exhibition in the prestigious Salon Carré, located between the Galerie Apollon and the Grande Galerie.

A very appropriate room since the artist is particularly fond of it. The reason? The Italian Primitives are presented there,"whose works illustrate for him the evolution of Western painting and the passage to a representation of three-dimensional space. Concerning the exhibition, it takes the form of"a selection of major works from each of his seven decades, from the largest French and foreign museums.

The idea behind this retrospective? "Toshow both the continuity of an entire body of work developed within the same concept of abstraction" expressed in particular by"purely classificatory titles (technique, dimensions, date) and the break that occurred halfway through, in 1979, which gave birth to a new painting". It is at this period that Pierre Soulages proposes what will become his fetish color, "outrenoir". The exhibition follows the artist's career chronologically, from 1946 to the present day, with paintings produced only a few months ago and exhibited here.

An exhibition that testifies to"the continuity of the work, but also to its different moments linked by the desire to bring out the light by contrast between the black color and the light parts, by superimposition and scraping, or by the mode of application of a single pigment. In short, an exhibition that plays with light and the relationship between black and light, a characteristic of Soulages' work. In short, a retrospective full of nuances to discover for lovers of black and its variants. Shall we go, friends?
