Officer & Gentleman in the 19th century, the exhibition at the Musée du Louvre

The Musée du Louvre is devoting an exhibition to the Horace His de La Salle collection from November 7, 2019 to February 10, 2020. Entitled Officier & Gentleman au XIXe siècle, this is an opportunity to discover one of the most generous art donors of his time.

Discover the importance of private collectors in their relationship with art and the development of museums. From November 7, 2019 to February 10, 2020, the Musée du Louvre presents an exhibition focusing on the collection of one of the most prolific donors to the Parisian institution, Aimé Charles Horace His de La Salle. Entitled Officier & Gentleman au XIXe siècle: la collection Horace His de La Salle, the exhibition focuses on the collector's acquisitions of drawings, sculptures and objets d'art, and his gifts to the Musée du Louvre.

In all, 21 paintings and 450 drawings were bequeathed to the museum. The exhibition aims to"give a faithful picture of the collector's taste and interdisciplinary character", with the participation of four of the museum's departments: Graphic Arts (67 drawings and one miniature), Paintings (four paintings), Sculptures and Objets d'art (seven Renaissance plates and sculptures).

The retrospective is complemented by more than forty significant loans from other museums: Alençon, Dijon, Lyon and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. It's also an opportunity for visitors to discover the world of collectors and their contributions to the development of French museums, particularly the Louvre.
