A plunge into one of the most fascinating civilizations... This is what the Musée du Louvre is offering through an exhibition focusing on Hittite art, entitled Royaumes Oubliés, les Héritiers de l'Empire Hittite, from May 2 to August 12, 2019.
More specifically, this exhibition invites visitors to discover around a hundred remains from three mythical sites of the Hittite Empire,"this forgotten civilization" rival of ancient Egypt, which dominated Anatolia (present-day Turkey) before extending its influence throughout the Levant until 1200 BC.
Some of these relics come from Tell Halaf, a majestic site discovered by archaeologist Max von Oppenheim during excavations between 1911 and 1913, and whose sculptures adorning the palace of the Aramaic king Kapara were severely damaged after various bombardments during the Second World War.
The exhibition places particular emphasis on the restoration of these sculptures, which began in the 2000s, and more generally on"ongoing efforts to preserve endangered heritage", of which this collection is an unfortunate example.
