We might think that JR loves Ieoh Ming Pei’s Louvre Pyramid: after making it disappear behind an anamorphosis in 2016, the photographer is now enjoying telling the secrets of its creations thanks to the support of 400 amateurs.
From Tuesday March 26 to Friday 29, 2019, these participants have planned to cover the ground of the Cour Napoléon (the one where the Pyramid is set) to create the biggest JR collage so far.
The idea? Showing the foundations of the Pyramid buried for millenaries to “become aware of how big Ieoh Ming Pei’s masterpiece is”. The only problem, the anamorphosis work can be seen from a place not opened to visitors… You’ll have to be happy with the 2 giant screens set in the Cour Napoléon to follow the installation live.
By the way, the Louvre chairman-manager Jean-Luc Martinez says “The Louvre Pyramid is a work of art on its own, a modern icon. Since its creation, it has made the greatest artists dream and inspired them. So, when JR came to me, 3 years after his first spectacular action on the Pyramid back in 2016 to tell me about a new proposition of collaborative work, I’ve been immediately seduced. It enhances this emblematic monument and allows everyone to take it over thanks to a popular and festive performance.”
The 400 volunteers will require the whole week to set the sheets of paper creating the work. A meticulous work when we know that JR wants to entirely cover the Cour Napoléon, including the pools and the pyramidions.
To see the final result, meet from Friday March 29 to Sunday 31 at night.
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
