Head for the Galerie de pierre haute, in the Château de Versailles, to discover the astonishing exhibition entitled Architectures rêvées (1660-1815), on view from May 3 to August 3, 2019, the wildest projects imagined for the Château de Versailles by architects from all over France.
Thanks to numerous French and foreign loans, theexhibition brings together some one hundred drawings, plans and texts of general projects successively proposed by architects over more than 150 years, from 1660 to 1815.
These include plans for countless projects, such as successive chapels and auditoriums, and garden architecture, which never saw the light of day for lack of financial or technical resources. We learn that a pavilion for Coronelli'sGlobes had been studied, as had an "Apollo pavilion" imagined by Tessin on the banks of the Grand Canal!
These sketches show great boldness. Unlike other châteaux, Versailles has always been a building site, where the skills of France's finest craftsmen are demonstrated to the world's leaders. From the launch of construction at Versailles in 1660 to Louis-Philippe's final transformation of the palace into a museum in 1837, the Château de Versailles has been a permanent construction site.
This exhibition promises to be a real curiosity-raiser, and when you leave it, all you need is a little imagination to bring to life this Versailles "as we never saw it, but as it could have been"!
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
