To mark the reopening of the Dauphine apartment, the Château de Versailles is devoting an exhibition to Marie Leszczynska, wife of Louis XV and Queen of France, from April 16, 2019. Entitled Le Goût de Marie Leszczynska (The Taste of Marie Leszczynska), the exhibition invites visitors to discover the life of a little-known queen who had a major influence on the château's interior design, in particular through"the creation of apartments" in which she expressed her personal taste,"both in the design of her official and private apartments".
A courtly figure who remained at Versailles for 42 years (the longest-serving queen at the château), she also influenced the arts and artistic life of her time, notably through numerous commissions for paintings, tapestries and furniture from artists and manufacturers. In all, some fifty paintings, sculptures and other objets d'art from the château's collections are on display for art and history lovers. The exhibition is complemented by several recent acquisitions.
However, the apartments are not presented"in their historic state of repair". These are due to be completely refurbished in 2020, following the restoration of the Dauphin's apartment. But whatever happens, this exhibition is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a fascinating and instructive part of French history. Shall we go?
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
