Antoine-Jean Gros from every angle... From June 27 to September 30, 2019, the Musée du Louvre presents an exhibition on the artist, known for having been a pupil of painter Jacques-Louis David. A retrospective of the work of one of the precursors of Romanticism in pictorial art.
The exhibition plunges visitors into David's drawings, which"testify fairly quickly to a gradual distancing from the classical teaching of his master", right up to his break with"neoclassical aesthetics and the affirmation of a new style". In all, some forty works are on display to accompany the publication of the general inventory ofAntoine-Jean Gros 's drawings in the Louvre (scheduled for release in June 2019).
This retrospective allows us to explore the painter's career and appreciate the quality of his work as a draughtsman, which is relatively unknown to the public, while at the same time linking some of the drawings on display with a number of paintings. From his training in David' s studio to his meeting with Napoleon Bonaparte in Milan, every aspect of his story is examined under the microscope. The exhibition concludes with examples of the"call to order that Gros imposed on his painting after the fall of the First Empire and with the Restoration of the Bourbon monarchy". A good way to discover the life and history of one of the artists who revolutionized painting in France.
