Berthe Morisot is the first impressionist woman who joined Monet, Degas, Renoir in this art movement as soon as 1874. The exhibition running from June 18 to September 22, 2019 at the Musée d’Orsay returns on the exceptional career of this painter through 60 paintings, between portraits and scenes of the daily life.
We (re)discover a woman who lives against the customs of her time and who chooses the life of the Parisian avant-garde in the 1860’s and becomes the witness of the bourgeois life, growing leisure, Parisian fashion and activities of the modern life whether it’s private or public.
Amongst Berthe Morisot’s masterpieces presented in the rooms of the Musée d’Orsay, Young Woman in Grey Reclining (1879), Reading With Green Umbrella (1873), The Cradle (1872) or Eugène Manet on the Isle of Wight (1875), paintings coming for many from private collections.
The Musée d’Orsay highlights her atypical career because at that time, the School of Fine Arts was closed to women. The young artist started as a landscaper. With her sister, she exhibits from 1864 at the Salon de peinture et de sculpture. To her, painting should endeavor to “capture something that passes”, this is how she will later turn towards figure and impressionism in the 1870’s.
In addition to these paintings gathered in this exhibition, the museum owns a very large collection of Parisian impressionist paintings.
