A whole part of French history to discover or rediscover... That's what the Panthéon is offering with a brand new exhibition, entitled L'Histoire Silencieuse des Sourds, running from June 19 to October 6, 2019. The exhibition is organized by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, in partnership with theAssociation des Amis de l'Abbé de l'Epée, theInstitut National de Jeunes Sourds de Paris (INJS) andIVT, the International Visual Theater.
The exhibition takes a chronological - and thematic - look at the history of the deaf in France, sign language and its evolution in society through the ages. The retrospective also highlights various personalities who are deaf or have fought for deaf rights, such asAbbé de l'Epée, Ferdinand Berthier, Etienne de Fay, Madeleine Le Mansois and actress Emmanuelle Leborit.
From the Middle Ages through the Renaissance to the present day, the exhibition features a wide range of historical documents and portraits of deaf men and women who have made history, both large and small. Alongside the exhibition, a wide-ranging cultural program is on offer: guided tours in sign language, round-table discussions, tours of the Institut Saint-Jacques... so many opportunities to discover deaf history from different angles. Shall we go, friends?
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
