From June 18 to October 27, 2019, the Musée du Quai Branly presents Palace Paradis, an exhibition of paper funeral offerings from Taiwan. An opportunity to discover a funerary art form that is little known in France, but of rare finesse.

A delightful dive into funerary art... That's what the Musée du Quai Branly is offering in an exhibition entitled Palace Paradis, from June 18 to October 27, 2019. A presentation of paper works from two major workshops in Taipei, Taiwan, Hsin-Hsin and Skea, presented here more specifically atAtelier Martine Aublet. An opportunity to discover the art of Zhizha, funerary paper objects burned to"ensure the material comfort of the deceased in the afterlife".

The exhibition, in collaboration with the Taiwan Cultural Center and the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, features ephemeral, poetic and realistic replicas illustrating the idea, in Taiwanese civilization, of"mutual dependence between the living and the ancestors". The idea is also to explore the origins of this tradition and its contemporary evolution.

At the start of the tour, visitors are invited to discover paper objects relating to the home, domestic objects and food, the first funeral offerings to be made. The second part of the tour is devoted to luxury and new technologies, and features copies of brand-name, state-of-the-art products, such as smartphones"equipped with special 'paradise' applications". Finally, in the last section of the exhibition, fans of Asian art can discover various objects relating to ancestor worship and protection against "hungry ghosts".

There are also two multimedia displays illustrating"the making of funerary objects and the cremation ritual", enabling visitors to"better understand the issues involved in this custom of making offerings and remembering ancestors". In short, an opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture as beautiful as it is fascinating... Shall we go, friends?

Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
