The Centre Pompidou is organizing a special exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Pierre Soulages. Entitled Soulages et le musée national d'art moderne (Soulages and the National Museum of Modern Art), the exhibition focuses on the special links between the abstract artist and the museum, located at the Centre Pompidou. The tribute runs from Wednesday, December 11, 2019 to Monday, March 9, 2020.
Theexhibition focuses on 14 worksthat symbolize the importance of Pierre Soulages in art since the end of the Second World War. Seven of these pieces are presented for the first time at the Centre Pompidou: admirers of the artist will discover works from the 1950s that were previously held in private collections.
Pierre Soulages reinvented post-warabstract art, adopting a unique style centered around black. His groundbreaking works are a must-see for all modern art enthusiasts. A prolific artist even at almost 100, Soulages created over 1,600 canvases using a variety of techniques: painting on paper, etching, bronzes, stained glass... The Centre Pompidou holds 25 of these works in its permanent collections, some of which were donated to the museum by the artist himself.
The Musée d'Art Moderne has regularly shown its interest in Pierre Soulages, presenting exhibitions and monographs between 1967 and 2018. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, the artist attracted the interest of several museums: the Louvre also devoted a retrospective to him over the same period.
Pierre Soulages is not the only artist to be the subject of an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou. If you come to see the Soulages and the Musée National d'Art Moderne exhibition, you'll also be able to admire works by Dorothy Iannone and Christian Boltanski, as well as the museum's entire permanent collection.
