A sculptor of genius, Agustín Cárdenas is no less gifted at drawing and painting. To pay tribute to his many talents, the Maison de l'Amérique latine is devoting an exhibition to the Cuban artist from September 1 to December 19, 2020. Entitled Mon ombre après minuit (My Shadow After Midnight), it features some one hundred works. Come and admire Cárdenas' sensual and passionate universe without hesitation: the exhibition is free! The exhibition remains closed until further notice.
Gouache, painting, sculpture, drawing, Agustín Cárdenas expressed his art in every medium within his reach. Theexhibition at the Maison de l'Amérique latine focuses on a group of drawings and paintings, mostly produced in Paris after 1955. As in his sculptures, these drawings reflect Cárdenas ' obsession with form. The works on display bear witness to a sensual, flamboyant imagination , a poetic vision of the world that is sometimes dramatic, sometimes tinged with humor.
These drawings are in keeping with the artist's favorite themes, with infinite variations on women, couples, mothers and children, love and nature. The Cuban claims that his art is "uncluttered", i.e. free of meaning. He loves and practices drawing for what it is, an unfinished line as much as a thought...
