An original dive into the world of Leon Monet, brother of Claude... The Musée du Luxembourg is devoting an exhibition to the collector and industrialist from Rouen, and above all the brother of the famous painter, entitled Léon Monet, Frère de l'Artiste et Collectionneur, from March 15 to July 16, 2023. This"chemist of color" will however have a key role in the work of Claude Monet by actively supporting him and his impressionist friends in their creation, through the foundation of the Industrial Society of Rouen.
A support which will be the beginnings of the constitution of"a remarkable collection of impressionist paintings". Léon Monet, very involved in the cultural milieu, encouraged his brother Claude and the Impressionists to participate in the 23rd municipal exhibition, where he himself exhibited four works from his personal collection. This event will bring together"one of the most remarkable collections of modern art in the Rouen region".
The exhibition of the Musée du Luxembourg offers a set of major works highlighting, through various paintings, the taste that Leon Monet had for the landscapes of his childhood, in Le Havre, or"his professional and family development between Rouen and the Petites Dalles on the Normandy coast". A highlight of the personality of the collector, as well as his privileged links with his brother, but also with Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro or Auguste Renoir.
In addition to the many paintings, photographs, drawings and color albums on display, there will also be color recipes, fabric samples and other account books, for a unique insight into the industrial Rouen of the late 19th century. Note that Claude Monet's first sketchbook, dated 1856, as well as the portrait of Léon, made by Claude in 1874, are offered to visitors for the very first time. Shall we drop by, friends?
