A formative journey, a decisive turning point, and dozens of works produced under the sun of French Polynesia: in 1930, Matisse left for an initiatory trip to Tahiti. An artistic epic recounted by the magazine Cahiers d'art and the Musée de l'Orangerie, in a new exhibition to be discovered from March 1st to May 29th 2023.
Good plan: the Musée de l'Orangerie offers discounted evening visits every Friday, for the duration of the exhibition. From 6pm to 9pm, take advantage of a 10 euro ticket to discover the exhibition and the permanent collections of the museum. Admission is free for children under 26 years old.
The Musée de l'Orangerie presents Matisse - Cahiers d'art, le tournant des années 30. In this retrospective, concentrated on a single decade, we discover the impact that this change of horizon had on the modern painter and his works. We take the opportunity to admire exceptional paintings, rarely exhibited in France, and coming straight from American museums. For art lovers, it is also an opportunity to (re)discover the magazine Cahiers d'art, and its way of talking about the great artists of its time.
Indeed, from the 1920s, Matisse became a regular figure in the pages of the art magazine. He is analyzed and discussed alongside Vassily Kandinsky, Mondrian, Le Corbusier, Juan Miro, Marcel Duchamp...
Thus, when Matisse decided to leave France to explore new horizons, on the other side of the world, the painter was closely watched by art professionals. This allows us, today, to better understand Matisse and his work, to know how he was perceived, understood, appreciated...
Theexhibition at the Musée de l'Orangerie highlights paintings, drawings, sculptures, engravings and objects from Matisse's collection, dating from the 1930s. But above all, the tour puts these works in parallel with documents, photographs, films or articles from Cahiers d'art, to better contextualize these works, to show the evolution of the painter and his popularity, and to take a different look at these collections.
The exhibition highlights the portraits of women and Matisse's famous Odalisques, as well as lesser-known elements of the artist's life, including his studies of dance. We particularly appreciate the parts of the exhibition that explain and dissect Matisse's working method: we can better understand his evolution and the creation of these exceptional works.
A fascinating retrospective, which looks back on a very special period in the career of this master of Fauvism. What are you waiting for to discover it?
