Van Gogh exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay, final days and evening shows

The Musée d'Orsay presents an exceptionalexhibition devoted to the works created by Vincent Van Gogh during the last months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris. This is the very first exhibition devoted to this crucial period in the artist's life. The fruit of many years of research, it will enable you to discover the works of this tormented artist from a new angle, and to better appreciate Van Gogh's artistic dimension.

Everyone knows aboutVincent Van Gogh his works and his tragic end. Would you like to know more, to enter his world, that of the last months of his life? This surprising artist devoted his entire life to art. He arrived in Auvers-sur-Oise on May 20, 1890 and died there on July 29, following a suicide attempt. Although he spent little more than two months in Auvers, this period reveals a remarkable artistic revival. His works during this period were marked by his psychological situation, but he also produced some of his greatest masterpieces.

After being severely tested by the various crises he underwent in Arles and then in the Saint-Rémy asylum, he decided to move closer to Paris and his brother Theo to find a new creative impetus. He chose Auvers because of the presence of Dr. Gachet, a doctor specialized in the treatment of melancholy, a friend of the Impressionists, collector and amateur painter. He took up residence in the village center, in the Ravoux inn, and explored all aspects of his new world, while struggling with multiple concerns linked to his crises, his health, his relationship with his brother and his place in the art world.

No exhibition has yet been devoted exclusively to this crucial period in his career. In just two months, he produced no fewer than 74 paintings and 33 drawings, including such iconic works as Le Docteur Paul Gachet, L'église d'Auvers-sur-Oise and Champ de blé aux corbeaux.

The exhibition features some forty paintings and twenty drawings, highlighting this period by theme: early landscapes of the village, portraits, still lifes and landscapes of the surrounding countryside. It will also feature a unique series of Van Gogh's elongated double-square paintings.

This exhibition has been organized by the Établissement public des musées d'Orsay et de l'Orangerie in Paris and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which is presenting it from May 12 to September 3, 2023, to mark its 50th anniversary. In any case, this exhibition is an opportunity for us to discover this crucial period in Van Gogh's life and appreciate its artistic dimension.
