Seductive, inhabiting palaces and lush gardens, using all their charm (and a few spells) to attract knights: female magicians are a key figure inRenaissance Baroque art. Their powers, the legends that surround them and the magic they master make them fascinating characters, both for the creators and for the public.
The Château de Maisons invites us to plunge into this enchanting universe, with a fascinating and entertaining exhibition that will cast a spell... From June 3 to September 17, 2023, come and admire the Baroque Magics exhibition.
Three great magicians were popular during the Renaissance: Circe, the enchantress who attempts to seduce Ulysses in Homer'sOdyssey; Armide, created by the Italian poet Le Tasse, who falls in love with her enemy Renaud; and Alcina, the main character in Handel's opera.
These three women, these three magicians, have much in common: they are women in love and rejected. They are powerful, reigning supreme over their idyllic kingdom before it is destroyed or undermined. They are in turn seductive, frightening, fallen...
These characters and their worlds become fantastic playgrounds for painters, playwrights, dancers, sculptors, directors, costume designers... The exhibition reveals the creativity that went into bringing these characters to life.
Castles and flower-filled gardens of Eden were the first things on viewers' minds... Before the world is turned upside down. Metamorphoses, disappearances, magic tricks, destruction of the dream world: artists can show off all their know-how and ingenuity in these spectacular changes, which require complex machinery! The exhibition at Château de Maisons also highlights all the processes used to create these worlds: scenery alone is not enough to create an illusion, visual and sound effects must be added to the spell.
The exhibition not only allows us to admire the creativity of all these Baroque artists, but also reveals some valuable information about the society of the time. Art reflects its time: we find the traditional royal banquets in these plays. We admire the works and glorified characters of the Renaissance, and discover the beliefs of the period in relation to magic, nature... All this in an immersive scenography, which also plunges us into the enchanted worlds of these magicians.
A wonderful journey awaits us at the Château de Maisons! Don't miss this fascinating exhibition this summer 2023.
