You probably know the town, but perhaps not the people who gave it their name. The Montmorency family is one of the oldest noble families in France. The Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau tells its story, in a fascinating historical exhibition on view from April 1 to October 29, 2023.
The exhibition Les Montmorency, une famille illustre introduces us to this dynasty, which lasted from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. Admirals, cardinals, marshals, viceroys of New France, governors... This family is to be found in every era, at every stage ofFrench history, in the upper echelons of power.
The Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau showcases various key figures from this dynasty. A close friend of François I, viceroy of France's colonial territories in America, governor of Paris and Île-de-France, companion of Joan of Arc... Over the centuries, the Montmorency family has played an important role in France's history. Thanks to a selection of works usually kept in storage, all these rich lives are now on show to visitors. Loans from the Musée de l'Armée and the Musée National de la Renaissance complete this historical and artistic journey.
Don't forget to continue your visit in the gardens of the Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau, where you'll find curious and unusual anecdotes about these famous French nobles.
It's a wonderful exhibition that should appeal to all history buffs! Take advantage of the fine weather to take a stroll around Montmorency...
