An artistic technique, a means of expression and communication: engraving has seduced all the great artists, and been used in all media, in all eras... The Musée Marmottan Monet explores the world of engraving and printmaking in a groundbreaking exhibition that brings modern and ancient artists face to face.
From July 5 to September 17, 2023, discover the exhibition Engraving Light. Over a hundred masterpieces by Dürer, Picasso, Rembrandt, Piranèse, Goya, Toulouse-Lautrec, Corot, Manet, Degas, Canaletto, Lorrain, Bonnard, Vuillard... are on display, as are works by contemporary artists, offering an interesting dialogue between the techniques of the past and those of the present.
The exhibition is divided into seven themes, exploring the artists' choice of subjects, the techniques used, influences, French specificities, and even the use of etching in photography.
Yes, printmaking and engraving may have been rendered obsolete by photography, but they had a strong influence on this modern art form. In particular, engraving revolutionized the reproduction of an image or scene, giving artists the tools to play with light and make their work more realistic than ever.
From the first woodcuts in the 15th century to the most advanced models of the 19th and 20th centuries, this very special art form has evolved over the centuries. This longevity has enabled artists to develop a large number of very different techniques and styles: in fact, engraving encompasses an almost infinite wealth of works, from etching to heliography, via the use of burin and copper...
From biblical scenes to more abstract creations, this exhibition shows us the full range of possibilities offered by engraving. You can't help but be impressed by the diversity and fine details that bring the works to life...
It's hard to sum up such a rich and diverse art form in just a few lines... All you have to do now is visit the exhibition at the Musée Marmottan Monet to find out all there is to know about engraving!
